The news organization of the future
Previous meeting (03-19) minutes

Confirming an idea for the focus of Aug. 7-8

Chris: You could develop the business plan for the Next Newsroom project. That is an outcome attributable to the JTM sessions. He, Shaffer and Overholser could polish it up. What he is willing to do -- his hope is to get something that will circulate around that will Shaffer will put a little of the format recognizable as a business plan and use that as an outcome, would that be a help?

Stephen: A tremendous help. It relates to this conference -- Len talked about putting some new models up on a wiki that people could interact with before a conference.

Len: You don't have a site picked yet?

Chris: Criteria. Four or five alternative funding sources. And some very different dynamics for how the newsroom would be supported with both professional journalists and community volunteers. It is pretty much written down. But it doesn't have that feel as a business proposal. It has already been presented to some venture capitalists. It has that much going for it.

Len: Is this a startup or in addition to an existing paper?

Chris: Either way. one mode is to take some sort of a publication now and transform it. The other idea would be to go to a smaller community and say would you as community leaders help us organize it and fund it.

Len: If our 100 words said help us build the news organization (not newspaper) of the future. Then we would be having a discussion based on a real action-oriented thing.

Stephen: The idea is that this would be one of the things happening at the DC sessions.

Chris: We have a little boilerplate that talks about what that Next Newsroom would look like. I think you are on to something. "Hear plans for and help us refine the Next Newsroom prototype developed at earlier Journalism That Matters collaborations."

Bill: Learned form Ken Doctor, Barry Parr and Howard Owens that Freedom Newspapers went to their Shelby, N.C., paper, which has been losing money, and said just go ahead and turn the newsroom upside down and do something else.

100-word statement update for AEJMC program

Journalims that Matters: The DC Session: What Will Happen When Only the Journalism Is Left?

The Journalism that Matters action-oriented discussions now come to the AEJMC. Journalists, academics, and public advocates will critique and build upon a 21st century newsroom prototype and help develop an economic model that supports it. Together we will begin to answer these crucial questions: If advertising and journalism continue to decouple, how can we ensure that quality journalism will have its own intrinsic value? How will our newsrooms and classrooms adapt to the new news ecology in which credentialed bloggers cover federal-court proceedings, vloggers go to prison in defense of First Amendment principles and crowdsourcing blossoms?

News: Kennesaw doesn't want to be the fiscal sponsor. Bill still has the door open and UMass and we could check with George Washington University.

Chris: Might be able to use APME Foundation. Waht would it entail.

Funding issues

Len: The budget is about $30,000. Checks come from 123Signup and donations would go into that account.
