Miguel Castro is a coordinator for the Open Society Institute - Media Program (OSI). OSI is a private operating and grantmaking foundation that aims to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights, and economic, legal, and social reform. In particular, the Media Program seeks to promote independent, professional, and viable media and quality journalism, primarily in countries undergoing a process of democratization and building functioning media markets. The program supports initiatives aimed at helping media-related legislation conform to internationally democratic standards, increasing professionalism of journalists, and strengthening associations of media professionals. The Media Program also supports media outlets that stand for the values of open society, as well as efforts aimed at monitoring and countering infringements on press freedom, and promoting changes in media policy that ensure pluralism in media ownership and diversity of opinion in media.

Castro writes:

"The concept and ideas surrounding journalism are changing at a significant pace. Working for a donor organization in the field of media development, I feel that I need to catch up with the cross paths between technology and journalism and how can we make sure that independence, responsibility, representation and democracy values are not lost in this transition. Primarily working with media organizations worldwide in developing countries, I feel that I will benefit by understanding the context in which new exploratory ideas of how the newsroom might function. The intersection between journalism and technology, business models transferable to the developing world, building alliances and responses of how media have to adapt to the new reality is an interest of mine for this conference. No question also that exposure to the innovation floating in the JTM conferences will give me knowledge and experiences to take home."
