New page

(incomplete notes by [http://newshare.typepad.com/about.html Bill Densmore])

Panelists talking about "ideology and government financing of media included:

*Russ Baker, investigative reporter
*Kristina Borjesson, former network news TV producer and author of books about media problems.
*David Clay Johnston, a free-lance investigative reporter from Rochester, N.Y., who has worked for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and others.
*Peter Phillips, a Sonoma State University professor who is director of Project Censored.

Peter Phillips says news that reveals ideological bias gets left out of the mainstream media. For example, he noted research showing that the notion of a "single-payer" health system in the United States -- with the government the likely single payer -- has hardly been mentioned in discussion about President Obama's health-care initiatives.

PHILLIPS: Increasingly the news is run by corporations that are in the advertising business. He says Robert Rosenthal mentioned public outrage. They random surveyed 376 people at the Minneapolis media-reform converence.

*Of those 99% agree with the statement that corporate media has failed to keep the public informed on important issues facing the nation.

*Ninety-one percent agreed with the statement that there is a truth emergency in the United States.

PHILLIPS: "We have to talk about how we validate news on the Internet." Project Censored has now 28 affiliate universities helping with the work of Project Censored. They want universities to research, vet and validate news. So that the universities can be a place where students can come and have access to quality news.

(The rest of this panel uncovered; I had to be on a conference call; if you were there, add your notes to this wiki)
