Michael Stoll

Michael Stoll (michael - DOT - stoll - AT SYMBOL - sjsu - DOT - edu) is spearheading the Public Press Initiative, a project to study noncommercial models for newspapers, in collaboration with Independent Arts & Media of San Francisco. Stoll teaches journalism at San Jose State University, where he has also served as associate director of Grade the News (http://www.gradethenews.org), a San Francisco Bay Area media-watchdog project.

With colleague John McManus he is the winner of two recent journalism awards: the Professional Freedom and Responsibility Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (2006) and a citation of excellence from the Mongerson Prize for Investigative Reporting on the Media from Northwestern University Journalism School (2006).

Stoll is a regular contributor to SF Weekly on media issues. He previously worked as a reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Hartford Courant, and as city editor, investigative reporter and editorial-page editor at the San Francisco Examiner. Stoll is currently secretary of the board of the Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
