Preliminary Program

The program below will evolve as we exchange thoughts with participants before and during "NewsEcology.org." What looks like a schedule shell, will actually be packed with specific ideas and proposals as we begin to work together. Even before you arrive, you'll learn about the professional passions and projects of fellow participants through pre-conference interviews and people's bios online. Think of this process as creating the panels and discussion based upon our collective knowledge and purpose. It requires a leap of faith. Neither a show, nor a performance, which implies actors and audience, NewsEcology.org is a collaboration in which all act and all listen actively.

Sunday, March 1 -- 3 p.m.-9:30 p.m. -- "Setting the Context"

(all activities, at Poynter Institute, 801 3rd Street South)

Registration open at 3 p.m.

Purpose

    • To create a shared framework for talking about the new news ecology that seeds thinking about new roles, new tools and new relationships/business models.
  • 3:00 p.m. --- Registration opens
  • 4:00 p.m. --- Introductions - to each other and to a preliminary map of the emerging news ecology
      • We’ll open with conversations among participants that introduce them to each other and to an emerging map of the new news ecology (as well as a map of the traditional newsroom)
  • 6:00 p.m. --- Dinner at Poynter
  • 7:30 p.m. --- Exploring the "Value Network of Journalism"
      • Hosted discussions on selected topics. Have a suggestion? Please contact us at jtm@mediagiraffe.org.
  • 9:30 p.m. -- Evening gathering ends.

Monday, March 2, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. -- at Poynter

Possibilities Day: Exploring ideas/designing initiatives

    • The first full day is a chance to broadly explore questions of interest. We’ll offer a focusing question along the lines of: “What journalism practices – jobs, skills, relationships, business models - can provide society the value journalism has to offer?”
    • Each of us has a picture of what journalism - at its best - might become. Using Open Space Technology, we will explore those images and begin to converge on a collective understanding of what can be accomplished individually and where common interests arise. Come prepared to discuss what most interests you.
