NewsTools2008.org is three days to describe and invent tools for sustaining "journalism that matters." Strip away the legacy platforms, and what remains of journalism that is needed to support participatory democracy and community? Spend a day describing those core values and elements. Then form design circles with technologists who will deploy their best tools -- off the shelf and invented on-the-fly -- to put them in practice. On Saturday morning, present and enjoy a JournaTech expo as companies and individuals display their ideas, products and services.

WHAT’S COVERED:

  • Programmers, innovators and entrepreneurs will explain how search, social networks, mobile computing, crowdsourcing, database mashups and identity management can redefine the making of news. *Journalists will explore business models, management practices, audiences/communities, journalism approaches and ethical guidelines enabled by the new technologies.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Pre-event interaction via web tools beginning Feb. 15; flexible attendance.
  • Cross-silo exchanges that open channels . . . create alliances . . . frameworks . . . deploy technologies . . . and establish or re-engineer organizations for producing “news that matters.”
  • Current-awareness briefings on the 5-10 technologies most likely to disrupt – and reinvent – journalism, news . . . democracy.
  • Break-out sessions -- some proposed in advance, some on the fly -- to update, exchange and build.
  • Design-build collaboration on "JTM-Next Newsroom" and other projects
  • News about the latest experiments in non-profit and citizen journalism and the technologies they need.
  • Shared insights on how the concept and practice of journalism may adapt to search and social networks, crowdsourcing, diverse, fragmented audiences and digital, participatory politics.

SPEAKERS:

NewsTools2008.org is designed to be a high-level convening for doers, designers, journalists, developers, entrepreneurs, investors and media-savvy, engaged citizens. "Speakers" are the participants themselves. We expect a number of prominent media and technology leaders will be among those holding sessions throughout the event.
