Prepping your 90-second “headlines”
This will be the most challenging part of the assignment: to outline the innovation/issue in 60-90 seconds so people can decide whether to engage in discussion with you about it.
Describe one technological innovation/disruption: What, where in development, and potential effect on journalism, news and democracy
Ideas for preparation
- decide your most important point
- give one salient example
- explain or eliminate jargon
- practice it in advance, and try it out on friends or colleagues
We’ll ask you to sit at a table with your innovation posted on it, and we’ll bring the mike to that table so you can make your presentation.
You’ll then have about 30-40 minutes to lead a discussion with whoever wants to discuss this innovation: current experiments, new applications, new business models, new management, ethical or other implications.
What to prepare for the discussion:
- Outline the key questions as you see them, from both a journalistic and technological perspective.
How to keep it an interactive session, not a presentation:
- Prepare a handout if you want to give people basic facts and figures, or put them up on an easel.
- Get a sense of who’s in the group by asking how many are familiar with the innovation, and how many came because they’re curious
- Ask participants what they think the key questions are, or what question they hope gets explored during the session
- If you have a large group, ask them to turn to another person and discuss their experience, excitement, or concerns about the innovation
- Encourage them to consider a project they’d like to explore over the next two days that might use or take advantage of the innovation
