Projects include a news bureau in a coffee shop in West Oakland

Kevin Keane, vice president of news, ANG Newspapers’ California Newspapers Partnership-North is the executive editor and vice president-news for six ANG Newspapers in the Bay Area, including the Oakland Tribune. Mr.Keane came to California after stints as editor of the Lowell Sun, (circ. 50,000) and as editor of the Lebanon [Pa.] Daily News. He has launched a number of ambitious multimedia efforts. They include a partnership with UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law and the Graduate School of Journalism to examine and report on alternative sentencing programs for juveniles in Alameda County. Another ANG project involves UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health in developing a health and safety website and database to encourage more nuanced crime reporting and to share preventive approaches. Plans are also underway to set up a citizen news bureau in a coffee shop in West Oakland. A reporter and editor would staff it full time, and people could drop by to share tips and suggestions. “We want to use the newspaper as a catalyst and to set up areas where citizens can come in and input information into a database,” Mr. Keane says. “We want [the newspaper] to be a thriving, living entity in the community.” In the meantime, more and more multimedia stories are showing up on ANG’s website.
