Background on Craig Sandler, CEO, State House News Service

I took the news service, which had been around since the teens, from print to digital; we host our own server (and keep it running!) and scramble to balance do-it-yourself digital Web presence and multimedia with the expectations of our demanding, well-paying niche subscriber base (subscriptions are $48/week and we’re thriving). We’re obsessed with content but understand people want more, more, more all the time – video and podcasts and gp3 files on their cellphones, and there’s only six of us. Both state government and media technology get more complicated all the time, so life stays interesting.

I also founded and jointly run with MassINC a New Media resource as a public service. It’s called IssueSource and is the only site of its kind in the nation as far as I know…it provides standing and constantly-updated chronologies of issues in Massachusetts news as they come to prominence. www.issuesource.org
