COUNTDOWN -- JUST 20 DAYS UNTIL NEWSTOOLS 2008!

To all participants in NewsTools2008, April 30-May 3:

In three weeks, Journalism That Matters participants -- about 150 of us -- will gather at our host Yahoo!-Sunnyvale for what may be an historic collaboration. First the first time, we're bringing together journalists and technologists for the sole purpose of inventing the future ecology of news.

This page is a copy of the first of three emails sent to NewsTools2008 registered participants pre-April 30 at 4 p.m., when we gather to consider a shared framework for talking about journalism and technology, enjoy a reception, a hearty dinner, special wine and do some mission-defining after-dinner coffee-table planning.

The email contained important information about:

  • Receiving and contacting your "pre-convening interview partner"
  • Seeding the NewsTools2008 social networks
  • Confirming the Top 10 disruptive/inventive technology clusters
  • Calling your breakout / developing a project
  • The links / resources page
  • Program updates, including the "untalent show"
  • A new option for one-evening dinner guests -- $75.00
  • Roomsharing, parking, transit updates

RESPONSIBILITY FOR SUCCESS

A thread running through what you'll read below is this: The success of NewsTools2008 depends on what we all bring to it. Information technology has been in uncharted waters for a decade or more, and journalism is now there, too. If we each commit to seeing at least one breakthrough as an outcome of NewsTools, there is more likely to be at least one -- and perhaps many! So please come with your glass half full of possibilities.

A FEW MORE SEATS

NewsTools2008 is close to being sold out. As of Friday at midnight, the "open" registration rate goes to $450.00. However, we will hold a few seats at the early-bird registration rate of $295.00 for technology-oriented participants who come recommended by an existing participant. If there's someone you think needs to be with us who is vital to engineering the New News Ecology, please give us a ring at 413-458-8001 or email jtm@mediagiraffe.org with the particulars. We'll extend a special invitation to them.

INTERVIEW PARTNERS

By Monday, your email inbox is going to contain a personalized email from NewsTools2008 convenors. It will contain the name, phone and email address and instructions about interviewing your special "pre-convening professional partner."

Previous Journalism That Matters convenings have shown this advance work makes important new connections and fosters fresh ideas. And it just plain gets things going faster when we convene. It makes the considerable amount of time we're all committing together more productive. And it increases the likelihood of breakthrough thinking or system design.

Monday's email will have detail and suggested questions. Briefly:

  • One of you can agree to write a brief "interview" report and either send it by email to jtm@mediagiraffe.org or post it to:

http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Jtm-sv-interviews

  • Or, you can use BlogTalkRadio to make an audio podcast of your phone discussion, after which it will be available for listening to the entire NewsTools2008 community. The details of this audio blog service -- new to a Journalism That Matters convening -- will be included in the email assigning you an interview partner.

THE NEWSTOOLS2008 SOCIAL NETWORKS

NEWSTOOLS2008/NING -- Add yourself to our NewsTools2008/ning.com social network site. You should have received an email last week with a generic password and a link to a page we've set up with your name. Ning uses your email address (the same address to which this note has been sent) as your ID and if we set up an account for you, we assigned a temporary password of “newstools” (without quotes) which you should change on first login. If you don't have that, sign up from scratch at:

JOIN THE NETWORK: http://newstools2008.ning.com/?xgi=9OozpZU

NEWSTOOLS/FACEBOOK -- If you already have a Facebook account, you can see the NewsTools2008 Facebook community at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=8945329548 (if you don't have a Facebook account, you'll have to set one up)

CONFIRM THE TOP 10 DISRUPTIVE/REINVENTIVE TECHNOLOGY CLUSTERS

There are at least 10 technologies or business processes which are disrupting or reinventing journalism. Help us confirm which they are and how they fit. Go to:

http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Jtm-sv-disruption

What's missing? What's out of place? Click on one of the 10 to add your comments to the wiki.

CALLING YOUR BREAKOUT / DEVELOPING A PROJECT

Probably the most important thing we can all do before April 30 is to think seriously about (a) what aspects of journalism need to be sustained in order to support democracy and (b) how elements of the 10 Technologies can be applied to that task.

Then, we need to convene breakout task groups -- we're calling them "Do Groups" and "Think Groups" -- to set the possibilities in motion. We’ll ask the Think Groups to document fresh insights, structures or alliances. We’ll ask the Do Groups to invent systems, projects and technology applications which can be implemented immediately. And we’ll ask everyone to take responsibility for pursuing whatever is personally meaningful that could make a difference for the future of news.

Review the breakout proposals so far at: http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Jtm-sv-program-topics

Add a new one, or add your name as co-convenor to an already-posted one. It's a lot to consider. If you want to do nothing but lurk for now, that's also fine. We invite you to be ready to contribute come 9 a.m. on Thurs., May 1.

LINKS / RESOURCES / TAGS

Two NewsTools2008 co-convenors are playing vital rolls in the effort to extend our work before, during and after the Yahoo get-together. David Cohn is managing and posting to our blog: http://www.newstools2008.org . . . and Kara Andrade is putting the latest in social networking and multimedia tools in place. As you speak with your pre-convening interview partner, or think through your ideas for NewsTools2008, you’re likely to refer to web-based resources and news. Share that information with the rest of the NewsTools2008 participant community. There are several ways to do this:

  • Add the tag “newstools2008” to your blog posts before, during and after our gathering.
  • As the event gets underway, we’ll also be using Twitter for real-time following of the NewsTools2008 discussions and work. Bookmark: http://twitter.com/newstools2008

PROGRAM UPDATES

Take a look at the program at this point (stillevolving): http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Jtm-sv-program

Here are some evolving highlights . . .

On Wednesday during dessert, and after discussing maps of the traditional newsroom and emerging news ecology:

  • Dan Gillmor will convene a short (half-hour), informal, stand-up discussion with two other people (TBA in the next week) to set the agenda/tone objective for the rest of the event.
  • Each of 10 separate designated participants will headline-speak for 60 to 90 seconds about one of 10 clusters of technologies which are reinventing or disrupting journalism. They will then lead coffee-table discussions as we continue dessert and coffee until 9 p.m.

On Thursday . . .

  • During lunch, Eduardo Hauser, CEO of DailyMe.com, National Public Radio board member and Knight Foundation journalism advisory board member, will briefly address the evolving world of news personalization.
  • At the Domain Hotel, where we'll have our reception and dinner on Thursday, VillageSoup.com founder Richard Anderson will conduct a short alpha demo of the new VS Learn/Share/Shop web community open-source platform, financed with an $800,000 Knight News Challenge grant.

THE UNTALENT SHOW

WHAT'S AN 'UNTALENT SHOW'? -- It's a chance for NewsTools2008 participants to show off their creative side in a relaxed ("it's OK to fail") environment that supports humor, serious insight, and whimsy. Research shows that when we let ourselves play, it enhances our creativity and effectiveness when we jump back into the work at hand. You'll be invited to sign up on Thursday and depending on how many folks do so, your chance on stage will last from three to eight minutes. It could involve music, rap, monologue, improvisational theater or other creative forms of expression – serious or not.. This will take place during and after dessert at the Domain Hotel, and after a brief presentation by our dinner sponsor, Topix. Topix is in the business of facilitating community conversations. Think of this evening as the NewsTools live blog comment room -- within community standards, while giving us all a chance to “let down our hair” (however much we have of it) and entertain each other.

On Friday . . .

  • At 8:30 a.m., Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation's Sunlight Labs will debut a set of website widgets designed to mashup public records for the sake of open government. He'll be followed at 9 a.m. by Fabrice Florin of NewsTrust.net, who will unveil new tools planned by the site which helps consumers to find, rate and use quality news.
  • We’ll then invite people to take their Thursday conversations the next step into design-build mode, setting the agenda around the question, “What's your next step?” And by end of day, we’ll have our first all-participant report back.

On Saturday . . .

See: http://artsandmedia.net/expo/journalism/

The day is open for any teams deeply engaged in developing their ideas to continue their work. At the same time, NewsTools2008 has joined with the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists for a structure day which opens with a Journalism/Technology Innovations Expo in the morning. That afternoon, SPJer’s have developed outstanding panels, including the possibility for NewsTools2008 teams to present what they have created. Watch also for an announcement about a keynote speaker at 10 a.m. on Saturday -- worth being present.. There are fabulous panels set for the afternoon, and all NewsTools participants are automatically registered to attend.

DINNER GUEST OPTION -- $75

One goal of NewsTools2008 is to start a collaborative network among journalists and technologists. There may be people who would like to be part of the network who are not able to commit three days to joining us. We invite those people to join us for the reception and dinner at the Domain Hotel on Thurs., May 1, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $75.00. To register, go to the main registration page and check "Thursday reception/dinner only" as the registration type.

ROOMSHARING FACILITATION

A check of the roster at the Domain Hotel, our official conference lodging venue (and location of Thursday night's reception and dinner) suggests some of you have yet to make reservations. Do so from:

http://www.mediagiraffe.org/Jtm-sv-lodging

Rooms are $159/night on Wed/Thur. and $129/night on Fri/Sat. This is the only hotel recommended by NewsTools organizers. If for some reason the Domain does not meet your neets, email jtm@mediagiraffe.org and we'll try to help.

If you are interested in offering or requesting a room share, you're on your own, but we've created a page where you can post your interest in either one. It's a wiki page, and you can edit to add your contact info and request by clicking on the "EDIT" tab, or just using the URL below:

VIEW ROOM-SHARE PAGE: http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Jtm-sv-roomshare

EDIT ROOM-SHARE PAGE: http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php?title=Jtm-sv-roomshare&action=edit

PARKING / TRANSIT UPDATE

Shortly before April 30, please check back to the page below for details on parking, shuttle van and other transit options from the San Jose airport, from the Domain Hotel, and adjacent to Yahoo:

http://www.mediagiraffe.org/wiki/index.php/Jtm-sv-transportation

We definitely will run van shuttles from the Domain Hotel to Yahoo each morning and evening, and from 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

  • YAHOO ACCESS -- The facilities Yahoo! has donated for NewsTools2008 include Wednesday afternoon/evening in their employee dining facility -- the "URL Cafeteria" -- plus and several conference meeting rooms on Thurs.-Sat. All are in Building D of the Yahoo headquarters complex at 701 First Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94089. All NewsTools2008 participants will have to be on a participant list to enter the building. If you’ve registered, you’ll be on that list.
  • YAHOO PARKING -- There is **almost no** guest parking at Yahoo itself (except on Saturday). For drive-ins, we are close to an arrangement for parking, a short walk from Yahoo, and right next to a light-rail/bus terminal.
  • DOMAIN HOTEL PARKING – The Domain Hotel, 1085 East El Camino Real, Sunnyvale CA 94087, has adequate parking for all participants in NewsTools2008 who are staying at the hotel or will be there for dinner on Thursday.
  • AIRPORT-TO-HOTEL – We expect to have in place some options for shuttling from the San Jose airport to the Domain hotel. It’s 8.2 miles, and about 13 minutes in light traffic. Here’s a map link: http://tinyurl.com/6m9wtu

A POSTSCRIPT -- HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DUKE NEXT NEWSROOM SYMPOSIUM

Last week Duke University, with the help of the Knight Foundation and Chris O'Brien, a Duke alum who works in the San Jose Mercury News newsroom, convened about 60 people to help figure out what the "next campus newsroom" should look like. Duke is committed to build a facility for all campus media in a couple of years that features media convergence.

Some of what the participants discussed will help on our work at NewsTools2008. Here's a link to some of it:
