There seems to be a "disconnect" between media as entertainment (including "info-tainment") and media as a means to strengthen democratic, civic ideals that enables a society to hold together at the center in the face of dramatic technological paradigm shifts. How do we go about educating today's youth for meeting 21st century challenges?

Aldon adds: It seems as if some of the disconnect is a result of underlying structures. The current media landscape is fairly hierarchical. It does not promote discussion. Digital media has the potential to shake up the hierarchy and provide better chances for dialog. It would be great to see the conference and its surrounding support structure created in a way to promote dialog.

Agenda thoughts from Andrew Lynn

From: andrew@mnn.org To: Bill Densmore <mediagiraffe@journ.umass.edu> Subject: Re: possible agenda items for wiki??

I truly believe that MNN Youth Channel's pioneering work in peer-to-peer media literacy training, and distribution of youth-produced video can bring something valuable to the table here.

agenda ideas----

some things i would like to see brought up this evening regarding creating a proposal for a potential conference are as follows:

(some are pretty straightforward, i think)

  • An outline of goals for such a conference
  • who is the target audience(s) for the conference
    • Aldon adds: I would like to start off suggesting that the target is very similar to the target of the MGP2006 conference, with more youth involved. e.g. journalism professors and other media educators, traditional journalists, and more youth, citizen, hyperlocal, digital media creators.
    • Related to this is how do we find the target audience. I believe the Bill's MGP contacts are a great starting point as, I hope, will be contacts that Andrew brings from his Community access work, the contacts that Project Harmony and 21st century Skills people bring with them and perhaps also reaching out to other communities like the community technology network and various non-profit technology groups.
  • what kind of specific support would be provided for assuring adequate levels of youth leadership and youth planning... especially in adopting a sort of OpenSpace-modelled atmosphere.
  • the need to support pre- and post-conference activities ... locally based conferences, presentations, and workshops in the lead up to and after the main meetup.
    • Aldon adds: This is really important to me. I believe that pre- and post-conference activities are essential. I also want us to think about the technology used for online pre- and post-conference activities, how we reach out to people before the conference and how we keep them engaged afterwards.
  • the various specific contributions that MNN Youth Channel could make.

Those are the basics for me. thanks for spearheading the wiki!
