Dec. 5 agenda thoughts from Aldon Hynes

There seems to be a "disconnect" between media as entertainment (including "info-tainment") and media as a means to strengthen democratic, civic ideals that enables a society to hold together at the center in the face of dramatic technological paradigm shifts. How do we go about educating today's youth for meeting 21st century challenges?

Aldon adds: It seems as if some of the disconnect is a result of underlying structures. The current media landscape is fairly hierarchical. It does not promote discussion. Digital media has the potential to shake up the hierarchy and provide better chances for dialog. It would be great to see the conference and its surrounding support structure created in a way to promote dialog.
